Mentoring visit lecture – Dr Nathan Thomas, University College London

Institute of English Studies at the University of Warsaw would like to invite to a lecture by Dr Nathan Thomas entitled “Getting the most from Students: Practical Ideas for supporting Strategic Language Learning and Use”.

Discussions about what makes language learning effective and efficient have long focused on what both teachers and students do. Since the 1970s, the field of language learning strategies has zoomed in on such perennial issues. The field has emphasized that students must be proactive in their language learning pursuits, and teachers must support students in doing so.

In this talk, I will provide an overview of some research in this area. I will draw attention to seminal work and recent advances in supporting strategic language learning and use. The talk will be interactive. Attendees will leave with practical ideas on how to “get the most” from their students through structured pedagogical support.

Dr Nathan Thomas is a lecturer in foreign language teaching at University College London in the UK. He is the author of numerous publications on experiences related to language learning and teaching, and his main area of specialisation is qualitative research. He serves as an associate editor of the journal “System” and is co-editor of the “Learning Strategies Journal” (due to be published in autumn 2026). Furthermore, he has taught in the UK, China and Thailand for 17 years, and draws on this experience in his academic work.

The event, organised as part of Action I.1.1/IV.1.1 “Mentoring Programme”, will take place on 29.05.2026 at 13:15 at the Institute of English Studies (Dobra 55) in Room 2.014.
