Center for Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, and Mathematical Sciences (IMAI UW)
The aim of the activities of the Center for Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Warsaw (IMAI UW) is to increase the research potential of the University of Warsaw by integrating research in the fields of artificial intelligence, computer science, and mathematics, as well as by establishing lasting mechanisms supporting the development of both fundamental research and applications in these areas.
The Center constitutes an institutional continuation and consolidation of activities carried out in the years 2020–2025 within the framework of the Excellence Initiative – Research University Program (IDUB), in particular the Priority Research Area POB III “Petabyte Challenge.” These activities contributed to the creation of new research initiatives, the development of international collaboration, and the strengthening of the University of Warsaw’s position as a leading research center in areas related to data analysis, artificial intelligence, and the mathematical and computational sciences.
The Center pursues its objectives by creating an interdisciplinary research environment that supports advanced scientific research, the development of new theoretical and algorithmic methods, the transfer of knowledge between disciplines, and the support of early-career researchers, doctoral candidates, and students.
The activities of the IMAI Center align with the mission of the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Warsaw as a university-wide platform supporting interdisciplinary research characterized by a high level of innovation, significant scientific importance, and strong international potential.
Tasks of the IMAI Center
The core tasks of the IMAI Center include:

Institutionally consolidating and further developing the outcomes of the IDUB Program in the areas of research related to artificial intelligence, computer science, and mathematics, particularly activities implemented within POB III “Petabyte Challenge.”

Conducting and supporting advanced scientific research in computer science and mathematics, particularly in areas including:

mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence,
-
machine learning, robotics, and data analysis,
-
discrete mathematics, probability theory, and other priority areas of theoretical and applied mathematics,
-
mathematical modeling,
-
algorithms and large-scale data processing.

Organizing Thematic Research Programs, including:

creating interdisciplinary research teams,
-
initiating competitions and programs supporting the development of new research directions,

coordinating activities enabling the implementation of research projects funded by external or university-wide sources.

Supporting the development of early-career researchers, doctoral candidates, and students by creating conditions conducive to their involvement in scientific research, including initiating programs for academic mobility, research internships, seminars, and other forms of academic activity, particularly within university-wide programs or those funded from external sources.
- Supporting knowledge transfer and the development of scientific competencies, particularly through:

organizing seminars, workshops, and scientific lectures,

supporting interdisciplinary collaboration among units of the University of Warsaw,

developing initiatives related to meta-learning and the transfer of knowledge between disciplines.

Developing international cooperation by initiating and coordinating joint research initiatives, supporting the preparation of grant applications, creating conditions for visits by international scholars, and enabling the participation of staff, doctoral candidates, and students in international scientific initiatives.

Supporting technology transfer and cooperation with the socio-economic environment, while maintaining the academic character of the research.
