Centre for Machine Learning (C4ML)
The aim of the Centre for Machine Learning is to enhance the research potential of the University of Warsaw and improve the effectiveness of research teams in applying machine learning methods in scientific research conducted across various disciplines.
The Center’s activities constitute a continuation and institutional consolidation of the results of Action I.3.7 implemented within the framework of the Excellence Initiative – Research University (IDUB) program. The goal of this action was to lower the barriers to entry in the use of ML methods by providing researchers with access to specialized technical support, analytical expertise, and computational infrastructure.
The Center pursues this goal by establishing a specialized team of data scientists who support research teams in the design, implementation, and deployment of machine learning models. By providing ready-to-use ML tools and models, the Center enables researchers to focus on the core scientific problems rather than on the complex technical aspects of data processing.
The activities of the Machine Learning Center align with the mission of the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS UW) as a university-wide platform supporting large-scale, highly innovative interdisciplinary research, and serve to ensure the long-term sustainability of the outcomes of the IDUB program.
Tasks of the Centre:
- Institutional consolidation and further development of the outcomes of Action I.3.7 of the IDUB program, in particular by ensuring continuity of support for research teams using machine learning methods.
- Building and developing expert knowledge in ML, including:
- systematic monitoring of advances in machine learning,
- participation in training sessions, workshops, and conferences dedicated to ML,
- development of the Center team’s competencies through implementation and testing of standard ML components.
- Providing technical and methodological support to UW research teams, including:
- design and training of ML models,
- data preparation and processing,
- implementation of efficient computational solutions,
- optimal use of computational resources (including GPUs).
- Facilitating access to computational infrastructure, in particular:
- support in using the resources of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling of the University of Warsaw (ICM UW) and PL-Grid,
- advisory services on the use of commercial cloud computing services,
- support in planning costs and computational architecture in research projects.
- Transferring ML knowledge and competencies to the UW academic community through:
- organization of recurring workshops and training sessions,
- direct collaboration with research teams,
- substantive supervision of students and doctoral candidates carrying out ML-based projects.
- Strengthening and developing ML-related initiatives at UW, including:
- support for conferences,
- organization of public lectures promoting ML to a broader audience,
- building networks of collaboration among research teams across different disciplines.
