Digital Economy Lab (DELAB UW)
DELAB UW (Digital Economy Lab of the University of Warsaw) is an interdisciplinary research center at the University of Warsaw dedicated to analyzing processes of digital transformation in the economy, society, and public institutions. DELAB conducts research on the economic, social, regulatory, and cultural consequences of the development of digital technologies, in particular datafication, automation, artificial intelligence, and digital platforms.
DELAB UW was established on December 1, 2013, as an interdisciplinary research center that brings together economists, sociologists, lawyers, and researchers from other social sciences in order to define new directions of collaboration between academia, business, and the media. Since December 2020, DELAB UW has been implementing a project under the IDUB program (Action II.3.6 – Impactful Digital Alliance). Since 2024, DELAB UW has functioned as a University of Warsaw Centre of Excellence within the Excellence Initiative – Research University (IDUB) program.
DELAB UW aims to:
- generate highly innovative scientific knowledge of international significance,
- combine basic research with applied research,
- support decision-making processes in the public and private sectors through reliable analyses and expert reports,
- strengthen the University of Warsaw’s capacity to address large-scale, interdisciplinary research challenges related to digital transformation.
The inclusion of DELAB UW within the structure of the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Warsaw (IAS UW) serves the mission of the Institute as a university-wide hub for advanced research and supports the continuation and further development of the outcomes of the Excellence Initiative – Research University (IDUB) program.
Tasks of DELAB UW
The core tasks of DELAB UW include:
- Initiating and conducting large-scale, highly innovative interdisciplinary research projects requiring collaboration between scholars from the social sciences, economics, law, humanities, and computer science.
- Conducting basic and applied research on:
- the digital economy and transformation of business models,
- digitalization of institutions and social processes,
- the impact of automation and artificial intelligence on labor markets, productivity, and trade,
- regulation of digital markets and digital economy law,
- digitalization of public services (including healthcare),
- digital transformation of cities, housing markets, the cultural sector, and creative industries,
- processes of deep mediatization and communication changes in society.
- Creating and developing research teams, including international teams, and supporting the academic development of early- and mid-career researchers.
- Preparing analyses, expert reports, and policy papers for:
- public decision-makers,
- national and European institutions,
- international organizations,
- businesses and civil society organizations.
- Disseminating research results through scientific publications, monographs, policy reports, seminars, conferences, and outreach activities.
- Acting as a bridge between science and practice by fostering dialogue between academia, public administration, business, the media, and civil society.
