IAS Research Centres

Within the Institute for Advanced Studies of the University of Warsaw, several specialized research centers operate, jointly strengthening the potential for interdisciplinary research and enhancing the University’s international standing.

Among the key units associated with the Institute is the Centre of Excellence in Social Sciences (CESS UW), located at the Centre of Migration Research, which integrates and supports interdisciplinary social research, with particular emphasis on global contemporary challenges and the development of researchers’ methodological competences. The area of digital transformation is examined by DELAB UW (Digital Economy Lab), based at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, which conducts research on the impact of digital technologies on the economy, society, and public institutions, combining perspectives from social sciences, economics, and law. Research on ancient heritage is carried out by the Centre for Research on Ancient Civilizations (CRAC UW) at the Faculty of History, which brings together scholars from various disciplines studying antiquity and strengthens the international visibility of this research.

Support for the application of advanced analytical methods is provided by the Centre for Machine Learning (C4ML) at the Faculty of Physics, which develops expertise in machine learning and offers technical and expert support to research teams. Complementing this structure is the Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Computer and Mathematical Sciences (IMAI UW) at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics, which focuses on advancing research in AI, computer science, and mathematics, supporting both fundamental research and applications, as well as international collaboration.

An important component of the Institute’s ecosystem is also Core Facility UW—a unit responsible for the development and efficient use of the University of Warsaw’s research infrastructure. Core Facility establishes a coherent system for managing, sharing, and maintaining scientific equipment, increasing its accessibility for researchers and external partners.

All these centers contribute to the shared mission of the Institute as a university-wide platform supporting large-scale, high-impact, and innovative research, while sustaining and further developing the outcomes of the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” program.
