The Rector of the University of Warsaw has established the Institute for Advanced Studies

The Rector of the University of Warsaw has established the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Warsaw. The new university-wide unit has begun operations on January 1, 2026.

Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, issued Ordinance No. 164 on the establishment of a new university-wide unit—the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Warsaw.

Continuation of the Institute for Advanced Studies

The newly established Institute of Advanced Studies continues the work of the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS)—a virtual unit operating within the ramework of Action I.3.8 of the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” (IDUB) program. IAS was created as a space supporting innovative and interdisciplinary research projects, as well as collaboration among scholars from different fields. The establishment of the Institute of Advanced Studies ensures the continuity of these activities and provides them with a permanent organizational structure within the University of Warsaw.

Mission and tasks of the Institute

According to the regulations attached to the ordinance, the mission of the Institute of Advanced Studies is to increase the impact of the University of Warsaw’s research activities on the development of global science. The Institute will:

support innovative research with high potential and international significance,
initiate and coordinate interdisciplinary projects,
create a platform for academic exchange, including organizing meetings, seminars, and conferences,
develop programs for researchers, including fellowships and initiatives supporting researcher mobility,
promote the scientific achievements of the University of Warsaw and strengthen its recognition at the national and international levels.

The establishment of the Institute of Advanced Studies is part of the University of Warsaw’s development strategy as a research university of international significance. The Institute is intended to serve as a collaborative space where researchers from various disciplines can undertake ambitious research projects, develop innovative ideas, and build lasting partnerships with academic institutions in Poland and worldwide.
